Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Guru of Sikhism, dedicated his entire life to connecting humanity with truth and the Divine. During his udasis (religious journeys), he visited various sacred places, where he guided people away from superstition and toward the path of true devotion. The Sacred Visit to Ayodhya
Historical sources and old janam sakhis make it clear that Guru Nanak Dev Ji reached Ayodhya during his first udasi. Not only that, he was present there on the sacred occasion of Ram Navami. Guru Sahib stayed at holy sites in Ayodhya such as Brahm Kund and Nazarbagh. While engaging in discussions with the saints and devotees present there, Guru Ji explained that the life of भगवान Ram was not merely the story of a king, but a symbol of high moral values and the victory of righteousness.
Connection Through Lineage and Clan
In Sikh historical texts, the lineage of the Sikh Gurus is linked to the family of Lord Ram. According to Bachittar Natak and other old writings, Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born into the Bedi clan, which is considered to be descended from Kush, the son of Lord Ram. Similarly, the Sodhi clan of the Tenth Master, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, is said to descend from Lav. This connection shows that the Sikh Gurus’ background is linked to the same dignified Suryavanshi tradition.
The Glory of the Name “Ram” in Gurbani
In Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the word Ram is used in a very exalted and pure sense. According to various estimates, the name Ram appears around 2,500 times in Guru Granth Sahib. According to Gurmat, there are two forms of Ram: one is Sargun Ram (King Ramchandra), and the other is Nirgun Ram, who is present in every particle of creation. According to Guru Sahib, that one Divine dwells in the heart of every being in the form of Ram. Gurbani shows us the way to remember that all-pervading Ram.
The Teaching of Morality and Maryada
Through the episodes of the Ramayana, Guru Nanak Dev Ji taught society about morality. He explained that Ravan was destroyed because of his haumai (ego), whereas Ram stood for patience and righteousness. The main purpose of Guru Ji’s visit to Ayodhya was to lift people above ritualism and connect them with the worship of the Timeless One who created both Ram and Ravan.
The relationship between Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Lord Ram is a union of history, lineage, and spirituality that binds Indian culture together. Even today, the gurdwaras built in Ayodhya in Guru Sahib’s memory stand witness to that sacred visit.
