At the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NSNIS) in Patiala, widely known as India’s city of sports, the precision and spirit of archery are on full display these days. The 7th NTPC Para National Archery Championship, being held from 30 January to 2 February 2026, has infused new energy into Punjab’s sporting landscape. Hosted by the Punjab Archery Association, this championship is not merely a competition, but a powerful expression of determination, resilience, and courage shown by para-athletes from across the country.

A National Gathering of Champions

This prestigious national championship has brought together nearly 190 para-archers from more than 20 Indian states, all competing to showcase their skill and focus. The event has drawn special attention due to the presence of athletes who have proudly represented India on international platforms.

Among the prominent participants are:

  • Harvinder Singh (Padma Shri awardee), whose presence has become a major source of inspiration for emerging athletes.
  • Rakesh Kumar, recipient of the Arjuna Award, renowned for his exceptional accuracy.
  • Sheetal Devi, an Olympic bronze medallist whose extraordinary determination has captured global attention.

The participation of these accomplished athletes has elevated the championship’s stature, offering young and upcoming players a rare opportunity to observe, learn from, and compete alongside their role models.

Historic Introduction of Blind Archery

One of the most significant and historic highlights of the 7th edition is the first-ever inclusion of Blind Archery at the national level. This milestone marks a major step forward in promoting inclusivity within Indian sports. Alongside this, a special classification drive is being conducted to ensure accurate categorisation of new athletes, enabling fair competition based on individual physical abilities.

Growing Awareness Around Para Sports

Compared to participation levels in 2016, this year’s championship has recorded a substantial increase in athlete numbers. This growth reflects a clear shift in social attitudes towards para sports in India. Enhanced government and non-government support systems are encouraging differently-abled youth to pursue sports as a serious and sustainable career option.

Expectations from Athletes and Organisers

Athletes participating in the championship praised Patiala’s sporting environment, stating that the city’s infrastructure and discipline are ideal for a focus-intensive sport like archery. Both players and organisers appealed to the media for wider coverage of the event, expressing hope that increased visibility would inspire differently-abled children watching from their homes to chase their dreams through sports.

A Celebration of Courage Over Adversity
