Sri Harmandir Sahib has its own special importance on the holy land of Amritsar. In the courtyard of Sri Darbar Sahib, there are 3 ancient ‘Ber’ trees – Dukh Bhanjani Beri, Ber Baba Buddha Sahib and Lachi Ber. Today we are going to talk about the Dukh Bhanjani Beri, whose greatness and history are associated with the holy tank of Darbar Sahib. By the way, all the berries in Darbar Sahib have their own importance, but it is believed that by bathing in the place where the Dukh Bhanjani Beri is adorned, all sorrows are removed. Let us know the history and importance of Dukh Bhanjani Beri.

dukh bhanjani beri sahib

It was in the year 1576 that a very rich moneylender Duni Chand lived in Patti, who had 5 daughters. He was very proud of himself. One day Seth Duni Chand asked his daughters whose food do you eat. To this, the four eldest daughters replied that father, we eat the food given by you. But the youngest daughter Bibi Rajni, who understood the mystery of Gurmat as she was raised in her maternal home in Lahore by a family of devotees of Guru Ji, clearly said that the only protector of all is God and everyone eats what God has given them. Hearing such an answer from Bibi Rajni, the arrogant father, who got angry, said that I see how your giver feeds you. The arrogant moneylender Duni Chand deliberately married Bibi Rajni to a leper and threw her out of the house.

Bibi Rajni believed in God. She considered her leper husband as her husband God. Bibi, obeying the order, kept her lame husband in a basket and carried his head high and went from village to village, arranging food. She prayed for her husband’s health at many religious places, so that he would recover. One day, she went to prepare food for herself and her husband by sitting on the bank of a mud pond under a berry tree.

In Bibi Rajni’s absence, her husband saw a wonderful sight. A black crow bathed in the pond and came out in the form of a white swan. Seeing this, he also thought that perhaps by doing this he would also get cured. Thinking this, he crawled out of his basket and dipped himself in the pond with the support of the berry roots. He was sitting holding a piece of grass with the thumb of his right hand. Therefore, except for this thumb, the entire leprosy on his body was cured by the grace of the Guru and his body became healthy. When Bibi Rajni returned, she was surprised to see this handsome man. She feared that perhaps this young man had killed her lame husband.

When this matter reached Sri Guru Ramdas Ji, who was serving Santokhsar, he dispelled Bibi’s fears and said that Bibi, due to your service, devotion, determination and the power of this place, your Pingla husband has become healthy. Guru Ji himself named this place, Dukh Bhanjani Sahib, which means the remover of sorrows. The name of the berry tree at this place became famous as Dukh Bhanjani Beri from that day itself. This holy place is called Gurdwara Dukh Bhanjani Beri Sahib. Centuries have passed, since then, according to the belief that has been going on, the devotees take bath at this holy place to get rid of their sorrows and their many sufferings are removed by the grace of God.
