Broom Warrior

Chandigarh’s “Broom Warrior”: 88-Year-Old Former DIG Honoured with the Padma Shri for His Dedication to Cleanliness

The elderly man seen walking the streets of Chandigarh every morning with a broom in hand is no ordinary citizen. He is Inderjit Singh Sidhu, a retired IPS officer of the Punjab Police and former Deputy Inspector General (DIG), who continues to clean his neighbourhood daily even at the age of 88.

From Morning Walks to a Mission of Cleanliness

Inderjit Singh Sidhu lives in Sector 49, Chandigarh. He recalls that he initially stepped out each morning for a walk. However, noticing garbage lying along the way, he began picking it up. Gradually, this habit took root, and cleanliness replaced walking as his daily routine.

At times, the garbage was so widespread that he would forget about walking altogether. Wearing gloves and carrying a broom, he cleans roads, footpaths, and open spaces with quiet determination.

Seasons Change, Duty Does Not

Weather changed not duty

During winter, his family advised him against going out early in the morning. He adapted by changing his schedule and now steps out for cleaning after breakfast. For him, this is not a task driven by pressure or obligation, but one performed out of a deep sense of personal responsibility.

A Planned City and the Role of Citizens

former DIG

Chandigarh is regarded as India’s first planned city, known for its wide roads, greenery, and orderly layout. Yet, Inderjit Singh Sidhu believes that planning alone cannot keep a city clean; active participation from citizens is equally essential.

Waiting for No One

civic role

He never waited for instructions or administrative orders. Wherever he saw garbage, he picked it up himself. His belief is simple: if every individual fulfils their responsibility, cities can remain clean on their own.

Honoured with the Padma Shri

Recognising his consistent and selfless service, the Government of India included Inderjit Singh Sidhu in the Padma Shri Awards list for 2026. The honour acknowledges his years of dedication and his contribution to society through everyday action.

A Clear Message

Clear message

His message is straightforward: the city belongs to us, and keeping it clean is also our responsibility. Do not litter, and if you see garbage lying around, pick it up. He says that if everyone does their part, the problem will resolve itself.
