Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in Gurdaspur organized a special camp for women with the objective of making them economically stronger and enabling them to stand on their own feet. Formed under various welfare schemes of the Central Government, these Self-Help Groups are emerging as a new source of hope for women in both rural and urban areas.
Through these groups, women are provided training and financial assistance for activities such as tailoring and embroidery, handmade products, pickles and preserves, and dairy farming. Loans at low interest rates are made available through banks so that women can start their own small businesses. Additionally, government-organized fairs such as the “Saras Mela” a national-level exhibition platform for SHG products and exhibitions offer them a larger platform to sell their products.
Employment Opportunities from Home
Gurpreet Kaur, a resident of the Kalanaur block, shared that she has been associated with a Self-Help Group since 2019. She said that when these schemes were introduced in villages, she joined first and then encouraged other women to participate as well. Groups of 10 to 15 members were formed, providing women with employment opportunities while working from home.
She also mentioned that earlier, in many villages, women were not allowed to step outside their homes. However, with the support of government schemes, they are now working from home and contributing financially to their families. According to Gurpreet Kaur, active members within the groups are given specialized training, and they in turn train other women, helping everyone progress together.
A New Identity Through the Scheme

Sandeep, from Babbehali village in Gurdaspur block, also shared her experience. She said she joined the scheme in 2019, and since then her life has changed significantly. According to her, had she not joined the program, she might have remained limited to household work.
She added that the scheme gave her opportunities to travel to different states and gain new experiences. Stepping outside the home not only increases awareness but also boosts self-confidence. Sandeep appealed to other women to join the Livelihood Mission and take steps toward meeting their household needs independently.
Foundation for Family Progress
Administrative officials state that when a woman becomes financially strong, the entire family progresses. Self-Help Groups have instilled confidence in women and enabled them to participate in social decision-making.
Today, Self-Help Groups are no longer merely a means of savings; they have become a strong platform that gives wings to women’s aspirations. With the support of Central Government policies, rural women are no longer confined to domestic responsibilities alone. Instead, they are emerging as successful entrepreneurs, shaping a brighter future for themselves and their families.
