Government offices across Punjab will remain shut, employees announce mass leave

The Punjab Employees and Pensioners Joint Front and organisations associated with the Punjab Joint Employees’ Forum have announced a Maha Bandh on August 27 over the long-pending demands of Punjab’s employees and pensioners. Employees have long been demanding the release of pending Dearness Allowance (DA) instalments and other government benefits.

Applications Submitted for Leave

Lakhs of employees from various government departments in Punjab will take mass leave on August 27, participate in the Maha Bandh and take to the streets against the government. More than 2 lakh employees from various government departments have already submitted applications for mass leave. It is being claimed that in the coming one or two days, this number will reach close to 3 lakh.

What Are the Demands?

The union’s main demands include the release of pending DA instalments, restoration of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), and regularisation of employees working on temporary/contractual basis.

Roads and Markets Will Not Be Closed

During this bandh on August 27, roads and markets will not be closed. The general public will not be inconvenienced in any way during the bandh. Only permanent and contractual employees working inside government offices will take mass leave, and no work will be done by them.

Government Schools and Colleges Will Remain Closed

During this period, government employees, whether they are doctors, drivers, office workers or Class IV employees, have all announced mass leave.

A Meeting With Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann Is Also Scheduled

A meeting with CM Bhagwant Mann has been called on August 27. Chief Secretary K.A.P. Sinha has called representatives of the employees’ unions for a meeting on Tuesday at 3:30 pm. Various demands of the employees are expected to be discussed in detail during the meeting. If the talks remain positive, the union will take its next decision.

The public is requested not to go to government offices for their work on August 27 and face inconvenience. Government offices will be locked and no government employee will be available.
