The history of India’s freedom is filled with countless sacrifices, martyrdoms and stories of patriotism. Among the great warriors who sacrificed their youth and lives to free the country from the chains of British rule, the name of immortal martyr Sukhdev Thapar is taken with great respect. On 23 March 1931, Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar and Shaheed Rajguru were hanged in Lahore Central Jail. The three kissed the noose with a smile and ignited such a spark of freedom and revolution among the youth of the country, whose echo can still be heard today.
Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar was born on 15 May 1907 in the historic Chaura Bazaar area of Ludhiana. He was an important leader, strategist and organiser of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association. He played an important role in the revolutionary plan connected with the Lahore Conspiracy Case and the killing of British officer John P. Saunders. But it is unfortunate that the young man who sacrificed his life for the freedom of the country, today in independent India, issues related to the ancestral house and memorial of the same great martyr have become a matter of discussion.
In protest against this neglect, the Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar Memorial Trust in Ludhiana has now announced that it will intensify its struggle. The members of the trust started a relay hunger strike outside the martyr’s birthplace, demanding that the government fulfil their long-pending demands.
Demand to Name Ludhiana Railway Station After Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar
Before starting the hunger strike, office-bearers of the trust and descendants of the martyr paid tribute by offering flower garlands at the statue of Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar. After this, the trust’s national president Ashok Thapar, Pali Sehajpal, Ashish Bony, Harry Virdi, Pramod Thapar and Sunil Thakur, along with other leaders, sat on a protest outside the martyr’s ancestral house.
According to the leaders, the hunger strike is continuing. The trust leaders say that every year, governments remember martyrs on their martyrdom days and birth anniversaries, pay tributes and make big claims, but at the ground level, the condition of historical places connected with martyrs is not given the required attention.
Among the trust’s main demands, the most important is to name Ludhiana Railway Station after Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar. The trust has for a long time been demanding that Ludhiana’s main railway station be named “Amar Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar Railway Station.”
The leaders argue that Ludhiana is not only an industrial city, but has also played an important role in the history of the freedom struggle. Naming the railway station after Shaheed Sukhdev would also give people coming to Ludhiana from the country and abroad an opportunity to learn about the life and sacrifice of this great martyr.
Governments Not Paying Attention to the Birthplaces and Memorials of Martyrs
The second major demand is the repair, beautification and improvement of the basic infrastructure of the road leading to the martyr’s ancestral house.
Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar’s ancestral house is located in the narrow inner lanes of Chaura Bazaar. The distance from the main market to the ancestral house is not very long, but the trust alleges that even the repair and beautification of this short stretch has been pending for a long time. Due to the poor condition of the road, hanging wires and other basic problems, devotees and tourists face difficulties in reaching the place.
While speaking, the trust’s national president Ashok Thapar raised serious questions over the functioning of the Central and Punjab governments. He alleged that governments spend large amounts on various memorials and projects, but adequate funds and attention are not given to the birthplaces and memorials of martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the country’s freedom.
Ashok Thapar also targeted Punjab’s Aam Aadmi Party government and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, saying that merely mentioning the names and photographs of martyrs during elections and political events is not enough. He said that if governments truly have respect for martyrs in their hearts, concrete steps should be taken for the maintenance of their memorials and birthplaces.
He said that the fact that people are being forced to agitate for the repair of the road leading to the ancestral house of a martyr who sacrificed his youth for the country’s freedom itself raises serious questions. The trust demanded that the government should not limit the matter to statements and assurances, but should begin the work in a time-bound manner.
Need to Connect Future Generations With History
This matter is not limited only to the naming of a road or a railway station. The question is also connected with how seriously we remember our historical heritage and the heroes of the freedom struggle.
Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar’s ancestral house is not merely the property of one family or institution, but an important historical heritage connected with the country’s freedom struggle. Its preservation can become a means of connecting future generations with history.
In India’s freedom struggle, countless young people such as Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, Rajguru, Udham Singh and Chandrashekhar Azad sacrificed their lives. Instead of limiting the legacy of these great martyrs to events and government statements, preserving the places associated with them and passing them on to the new generation is also our collective responsibility.
During the hunger strike, the trust leaders also warned that if the government does not take concrete action on their demands soon, the struggle will be intensified further. They said that in the next phase, a larger movement would be launched by bringing together patriotic organisations from across Punjab, youth, farmers, labourers and ordinary people.
The trust also said that if the demands are not accepted, steps such as surrounding the Chief Minister’s residence in Chandigarh would also be considered. The leaders said that responsibility for this would lie with the government and administration.
Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar’s Legacy Is Not Limited to Ludhiana or Punjab!
Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar’s legacy is not limited only to Ludhiana or Punjab. He was one of the heroes of India’s freedom struggle whose sacrifice inspired the youth of the country to fight for freedom.
Therefore, the maintenance of his ancestral house, beautification of the surrounding area and highlighting of its historical importance should be a priority for the government.
The identity of any nation is linked with its history and the respect it shows towards its heroes. Nations that forget the sacrifices of their martyrs deprive their future generations of history.
Therefore, the demand for the preservation of Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar’s ancestral house and the naming of Ludhiana Railway Station should not be viewed merely as the demand of one organisation, but as an issue connected with historical heritage.
It now remains to be seen how the government and administration respond to the questions and demands raised by the trust. Will concrete steps be taken at the government level to improve Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar’s ancestral house and the infrastructure connected with it, or will this issue also remain limited to assurances and announcements?
This question has now become important not only for the people of Ludhiana but for every citizen who respects the martyrs.
