Veteran Punjabi singer Daler Mehndi is in the news, not because of a new song, but because of a controversy during the Kunjapuri fair in Uttarakhand. What began as a cabinet minister’s reprimand on stage has now snowballed into a huge debate on social media. Daler Mehndi’s brother and singer Mika Singh has issued a challenge in his defence that has added to the controversy. Mika Singh has said he will quit singing if anyone can prove that Daler Mehndi consumes alcohol.
What Actually Happened?
Daler Mehndi had been invited to perform during the Kunjapuri fair in New Tehri. While he was performing, state cabinet minister Subodh Uniyal came on to the stage and expressed displeasure with the singer’s performance. The minister told the singer, “You cannot even speak properly, how will you sing?” Saying the singer appeared to be under the influence of intoxicants, the minister asked him to stop performing. He said that the occasion was a religious gathering and its dignity ought to be maintained.
Subodh Uniyal also said that the singer had been paid to entertain people, but his performance was not up to the mark. Daler Mehndi requested the minister with folded hands to step down from the stage. After the video of the incident went viral, two camps formed on social media. Some questioned the singer’s performance, while many criticised the manner in which he was publicly scolded on stage.
Mika Singh’s Open Challenge: If Proven, I’ll Quit Singing!

After the controversy escalated, Daler Mehndi’s brother Mika Singh came forward in his support. In a video message shared on his Instagram account, Mika rejected the allegations of drinking and said that if anyone could prove that Daler Mehndi drinks alcohol, he would give up singing.
Mika expressed disappointment at the damage being done to an artiste’s reputation without any solid evidence. He also appealed to media organisations to verify the facts thoroughly before publishing any news.
According to Mika, Daler Mehndi has been dealing with health issues for the past two years and underwent a major surgery recently. Despite this, he has been performing on stage for his fans. Mika clarified that his brother does not consume alcohol and that the allegations against him were baseless.
Kapil Sharma, Badshah, and Anupam Kher Also Extend Support
Several other figures from the entertainment industry have come out in support of Daler Mehndi. Comedian Kapil Sharma, singers Badshah and Harshdeep Kaur, actors Anupam Kher and Rajpal Yadav have all reacted to the incident.
Kapil Sharma, while sharing Mika Singh’s post, mentioned Daler Mehndi’s recent surgery.
Singer Badshah said that publicly humiliating an artiste is painful. According to him, a veteran artiste deserves respect, especially when they are going through health-related difficulties.
Singer Harshdeep Kaur said Daler Mehndi may not have been feeling well that day. She said that when Daler Mehndi is on stage, he does not just sing, he roars with his voice.
In a video message, Anupam Kher expressed sorrow over the treatment meted out to Daler Mehndi on stage.
Actor Rajpal Yadav also defended the singer, saying that he does not drink alcohol and that his health was not good at the time. Questioning the minister’s behaviour, he appealed for respect for the arts and the artistes.

Singer Shaan also supported Daler Mehndi, calling “Daler Paji” a true rockstar. He said, “Daler Mehndi has shown the world how to set a stage on fire with his voice and style.”
Actress Shilpa Shetty expressed sadness over questions being raised about Daler Mehndi’s talent. She wished him a speedy recovery during this difficult time.
Pop singer Alisha Chinai said that Daler Mehndi has won hearts with his powerful music and that he does not need to prove his talent to anyone.
While many film stars are supporting Daler Mehndi on the issue, singer Sona Mohapatra has made a statement that appears to further muddy the waters.
Sona Mohapatra’s Contrarian View
Singer Sona Mohapatra is known for her candour. Responding to the controversy, she said: “I am quite shocked by the controversy in Uttarakhand. Most of the discussion on this issue is about the humiliation of the artiste. But amid all this, no one is addressing whether the audience present at the concert got what they expected. I know that a great artiste always deserves respect, empathy, and gratitude for their lifelong contribution.”

She said, “Respect is not a one-sided entitlement; it is a mutual relationship. Age, legacy, and stature deserve respect, but none of these exempt any of us from professional responsibility. Mehndi ji is an exceptional legacy and a special recipient of respect, but does he extend the same respect to his audience? My answer to this will undoubtedly invite criticism.”
A New Debate: Artist’s Dignity or Performance Accountability?
While acknowledging Daler Mehndi’s legacy and contribution to the music world, Sona Mahapatra raised the question of whether the artiste had also shown equal respect toward his audience. Her statement has sparked a new debate in the controversy, where the discussion now includes not only the artiste’s dignity but also professional accountability and the audience’s rights.
The matter, which began at the Kunjapuri fair, is no longer limited to a viral video. On the one hand, questions are being raised about the dignity of the event and accountability for the performance; on the other hand, issues of the artiste’s health, personal dignity, and unverified allegations are being discussed.
Amid questions raised over Daler Mehndi’s performance, Mika Singh’s open challenge and the support of other artistes are giving the controversy a new turn. It remains to be seen whether the matter stays confined to a social media debate or goes further. For now, one thing is clear- this controversy connected to Daler Mehndi’s voice has sparked a new conversation in the music world about respect, health, and public accountability.
