Punjabi University’s 65th Foundation Day: The Flame of Education Lit Since 1965 Still Illuminates the Lives of Lakhs of Students

Punjabi University, Patiala, is one of India’s most distinctive educational institutions, with a proud and unique history. Established on 30 April 1962 under Act No. 35 of 1961 of the Punjab Legislative Assembly, it became the second university in the world, after Israel’s Hebrew University, to be named after a language. Its main objective was to promote the all-round development of Punjabi language, literature and culture, and to establish Punjabi as a medium of higher education across disciplines.

Nearly two months after its establishment, on 24 June 1962, the foundation stone of the university was laid by the then President of India, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. In his inaugural address, he underlined the importance of higher education, saying that universities are the backbone of nation-building. He believed that in a democratic India, universities had the responsibility to produce independent and strong citizens who would have equal opportunities for social and intellectual growth.
