From the narrow pathways of agricultural fields and the courtyards of military families, Punjab’s daughters are now stepping forward to shoulder the responsibility of defending the nation. The latest and most inspiring examples of this transformation are Mahikpreet Kaur and Komalpreet Kaur. Though they come from different families and backgrounds, both share the same destination — serving the nation in uniform.
The remarkable achievements of these two talented cadets have brought immense pride to Punjab.
Farmer’s Daughter Secures AIR-1
Mahikpreet Kaur, a resident of Paprali village in Rupnagar district, belongs to a modest farming family. Her father, Amarjit Singh, is a farmer, while her mother, Rupinder Kaur, is a homemaker. Growing up while witnessing the hard work and struggles of agricultural life, Mahikpreet has achieved what countless young aspirants dream of.
She secured All India Rank 1 (AIR-1) in the merit list of the Air Force Academy (AFA), earning the top position across the country.
Military Family’s Daughter Excels in NDA
Meanwhile, Komalpreet Kaur from Shahura village in Amritsar comes from a military background. Her father, Gurmeet Singh, serves as a Havildar in the Indian Army. Having grown up in an environment shaped by discipline, patriotism, and military values, Komalpreet achieved All India Rank 18 (AIR-18) in the National Defence Academy (NDA) examination.
This accomplishment is equally noteworthy and reflects her dedication and determination.
Mai Bhago Institute: The Foundation Behind Their Success
A major contributor to the success of both young women is the Mai Bhago Armed Forces Preparatory Institute (MAFPI) in Mohali. The institute is not merely a training centre; it has become a launchpad for young women aspiring to become officers in the Indian Armed Forces.
Operating under Punjab’s Department of Employment Generation and Training, this unique initiative has helped numerous women earn commissions in the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
Changing the Image of Daughters in Punjab
Major General J.S. Sandhu (Retd.), Director of the institute, stated that the NDA Wing for girls, launched in 2023 under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, is now delivering encouraging results.
The stories of Mahikpreet and Komalpreet represent more than individual achievements. They reflect a broader social transformation taking place across Punjab.
There was a time when girls in rural areas had limited educational and career opportunities. Today, those same daughters are undergoing rigorous military training, topping national-level competitive examinations, and securing places in institutions once considered the exclusive domain of men.
Despite the limited number of seats available for women in defence services, these young women have demonstrated that talent, determination, and perseverance can overcome every barrier.
An Inspiration for Thousands of Young Girls
Congratulating both cadets on their achievements, Punjab Cabinet Minister Aman Arora said that their success would inspire thousands of girls from villages and small towns across the state to dream of serving the nation and reaching leadership positions in the armed forces.
Their stories prove that the size of a dream is not determined by one’s address, background, or economic status. With family support, proper guidance, and access to opportunities, daughters from rural Punjab can reach the country’s most prestigious institutions.
Mahikpreet and Komalpreet have not only achieved their own goals but have also paved the way for countless young girls who aspire to follow in their footsteps.
