Komal Mahant

Samana city’s new way of thinking: Komal Mahant elected Municipal Councillor

Punjab has long been known for its progressive and forward-looking mindset. A powerful example of that was seen in the recent municipal council elections. Rising above caste and social prejudice, the people of Ward No. 18 in Samana city, Patiala district, elected Komal Mahant, who belongs to the transgender community, as their representative with a resounding majority. This victory is not just a political success, but also a major symbol of social change, proving that people are now giving greater importance to a spirit of service rather than to identity.

Why Komal Mahant entered politics

Municipal Councillor

Komal Mahant says contesting the election was never a personal ambition. Instead, it was the people of the ward who encouraged them to step into the political arena after witnessing their commitment to public service. The poor condition of basic civic amenities in the ward—such as lanes, drains and sewerage—and the lack of any real improvement had become a major concern for them.

At the same time, the growing drug problem among the youth, broken families, distressed wives and elderly parents facing abuse deeply moved them and inspired them to enter politics with the aim of bringing about social reform.

Serving people by mortgaging gold bangles

Komal Mahant’s journey of public service began long before the elections. For years, they have been helping underprivileged families, especially by attending the weddings of poor girls and offering blessings and financial support.

During the Covid pandemic, when many families were struggling even for food, Komal Mahant set an extraordinary example. Despite financial hardship, they mortgaged their gold bangles in order to arrange ration and ensure that essential supplies reached needy households. They believe that the blessings of those daughters, sisters and poor families are what have brought them to this point today.

Public love and religious faith

Sharing memories of their bond with the people of the ward, Komal Mahant said that for a long time they have been actively participating in jagratas, religious langars and community celebrations in the city. They have deep faith in saints, fakirs and Mata Rani. According to them, it is the blessings received through such religious service and the grace of the spiritual figures they revere that have brought goodness back into their life.

Speaking about the respect they receive from residents and elders in the city, they said that the people of Punjab are generous and supportive, and stand by those who work sincerely for the public good.

This victory has also helped change people’s perception of the transgender community. According to Komal Mahant, being transgender is not a curse; a person with good intentions can do a great deal for society. They say they feel joy in using the love, blessings and gifts they receive from people for social service.

Praising the respect shown by the people of Punjab, they added that good deeds always bring good results. Those who do wrong ultimately earn no respect in society, which is why one should always walk on the path of public welfare and service.
