Diljit Dosanjh

‘Main Hoon Punjab’ identity of Diljit Dosanjh Politics Can’t Ignore

Being a celebrity is not easy, especially one whose appeal stretches far beyond national borders. Few Indian artistes today command the kind of loyalty among the diaspora that Diljit Dosanjh does. Ever since he burst on the scene with his debut album Ishq Da Uda Ada in 2004, his popularity has been on an upward trajectory. Hit Punjabi songs, successful Punjabi and Bollywood films, sold-out international tours – each milestone only widened his reach.

But 2023 marked something bigger. At the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Dosanjh became the first turbaned Sikh artiste in traditional attire to command the iconic global stage. Singing in Punjabi before an international audience, he turned what could have been a performance into a cultural moment. His back-to-back appearances with Ed Sheeran further cemented his crossover appeal, proving Punjabi music was no longer niche – it had gone global.

There is little doubt then that political parties back home may have approached Dosanjh with offers to join or campaign for them. However, he has put an end to such speculations. In a post on X, Dosanjh said, “Kadey v Nhi… (never) Mera Kam Entertainment Karna (my job is to entertain) Am Very Happy In My Field, Thank You So Much.” With assembly elections due in Punjab next year, politicking has begun in right earnest. On Saturday, a forum of retired bureaucrats, defence personnel and professionals- Jaago Punjab Manch- took out a full-page advertisement in a leading newspaper urging the singer to take over the political leadership of Punjab “brought to its knees by successive dispensations.”

The controversy escalated this week after shots were reportedly fired outside the Karnal residence of Dosanjh’s manager. Even though Haryana Police has claimed there was no formal complaint and nothing was found from the spot, a social media handle linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang has claimed responsibility for the incident. A day later, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann accused the BJP of resorting to “intimidation tactics” against Dosanjh after he declined their offer. Mann said, “Since Diljit declined BJP’s offer, politics of intimidation has begun against him, which is unfair. Attacking his manager’s house reflects this politics of threat.”

Questions over Citizenship

The Punjabi icon’s no to enter politics saw another interpretation on Thursday with a report in The Indian Express claiming that Dosanjh has been a US citizen since 2022. Quoting sources, the report said Dosanjh had been travelling to India on an e-visa since September 2022 which means he does not even have an OCI card (Overseas Citizen of India). Though there has been no official confirmation from the singer, the claim has reignited debates around identity, nationalism and celebrity in Punjab’s hyper-politicised climate.

Dosanjh, meanwhile, appears determined to stay focused on his art. He is currently on tour in the US as part of his Aura World Tour 2026. Earlier, this month, he stopped his concert midway in Calgary, Canada after spotting pro-Khalistan flags in the crowd. He asked the disruptive elements to leave the venue, an action that later invited threats from extremist groups. Addressing the crowd, he said, “We often say the national media doesn’t talk about Punjab enough. I went everywhere, including on that channel (Sony Entertainment Television for KBC) for the sake of Punjab. I put forth Punjab’s issues there. I’ve even donated generously to my state whenever needed,” amidst cheers from the audience.

Last year, Dosanjh appeared on Kaun Banega Crorepati’s Season 17 and won Rs 50 lakh which was donated towards Punjab flood relief efforts. However, he faced controversy over touching the feet of Amitabh Bachchan, the show’s host. He made his entry singing ‘Main Hoon Punjab’ on the show.

Late last month, he appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, where he raised the 112-year-old Komagata Maru incident. Back in 1914, the Canadian government did not allow the 376 passengers, majority of them Sikhs, aboard the ship SS Komagata Maru from disembarking on the shores of Vancouver. The government citied the Continuous Journey Regulation which, in effect, barred Indians from entering Canada since there was no direct journey from India to Canada. For two months, the passengers were stranded in the harbour without food and water.

Raising the incident, Dosanjh said he felt proud performing in a stadium full of fans just 2 kms away from the site of the standoff. “They did not allow us then. Now 55,000 people were there to celebrate us, ” he told Fallon while also teaching him some bhangra moves on the show. It was a reminder of how far Punjabi identity has travelled – from exclusion to global celebration.

And perhaps that is the real difficulty of being Diljit Dosanjh. He is no longer merely a singer or an actor. To millions of Punjabis across the world, he has become a symbol – of pride, visibility and aspiration. Every performance, every statement, every silence now carries political and cultural meaning far beyond entertainment.

For Dosanjh himself, the challenge may simply be trying to remain an entertainer while the world insists on turning him into something larger. For now, his motto seems to be: “I’ll keep trying for as long as I live to spread happiness.”
