Mahinderdeep Grewal is his pen name but in his official papers it is Gurdeep Singh Grewal. His native village is Dhandra, but due to his father’s death in his childhood, he was brought up in his maternal grandfather’s house in Salempur village near Siddhavan Bet (Ludhiana). After doing B.Sc non-medical from Lajpat Rai Memorial College, Jagraon, he did B.Ed from Guru Hargobind Khalsa College of Education Guru Sir Sadhar and became a government school teacher.
Due to his fondness for writing poetry, he adopted Takht Singh, a capable Ghazalgo principal living in Jagraon, as his teacher. Mahendradeep Grewal has a very prominent name in the creation of Punjabi Ghazal. His first poetry collection was “Lahu Bolda Hai” and his second poetry collection was “Safr Di Rutt”. After this, five more of his poetry and ghazal collections were also published. Mahendradeep Grewal built a house on Jagraon Rahandian Tehsil Road and the name of the locality became famous as Gurdeep Nagar.
He came to Ludhiana in 1970-71. Mahendradeep has been our friend since then. The literary duo of Kulwant Jagraon and Mahendradeep taught us literary style. Prof. He is the founder of Mohan Singh Memorial Foundation. Jagdev Singh was an early associate of Jassowal. He also became the General Secretary of the Central Punjabi Writers’ Association (Reg.) with unanimous consent. He is a life member of Punjabi Sahitya Academy, Ludhiana. Nowadays, he lives in Chicago (America) with his younger son.
Gurdial Roshan ji writes about Mahendradeep Grewal that he is a product of the Punjabi Ghazal movement that started in the seventies. His Ghazals add more color and give energy to the sad areas. Grewal is a ghazal writer striving for change along with romance. He has been associated with the education sector and has retired as a lecturer from the Education Department of Punjab. He has been getting many opportunities to be in the company of great ghazal writers of Punjab and his ghazals have been appreciated by Pt. Takhat Singh has also received the blessings of Huron. Mahendradeep Grewal has also written and published a poetry collection in English. Now, due to illness and advanced age, his pen is a little sad and a little silent too. Grewal, who was once associated with literary activities, has received many honors in his life.

Door hain toon, magar nazar pahunchi,
Mere dar ton oh tere dar pahunchi.

Mainu lai ke teri dagar pahunchi.
Phar ke ungli oh lai gayi mainu,
Ban ke meri oh hamsafar pahunchi.
Tere bolan ne aaun da hi keha,

Eh kidharon aa rahi hai door ton sada koi,
Kite udeek taan hovegi us jagah koi.
Eh mere hath kiven bhij gaye ne chehre ’te,
Main varha riha haan jaan eh varh rahi ghata koi.
Bhatak riha haan main jis raah ’te bina ruk ke,
Safar eh keha hai jis da nahin sira koi.
Eh meri tarap hai jaan lahar hai samundar di,
Kadon bani, kadon mit jaaye na pata koi.
Koi taan ching jehi phutt pai hai rooh andar,
