A proud moment has emerged for Punjabis living across the world. Arvinder Singh Khosa, a son of the soil from Ferozepur, Punjab, has brought glory to his roots by winning the prestigious election as President of Cricket Canada. This victory has not only strengthened the presence of Punjabis in Canada’s sporting landscape but has also brought international recognition to the border district of Ferozepur.
Arvinder Singh Khosa, popularly known in the sports world as “Afridi,” hails from the village of Kotha Ambarhar in Ferozepur. Sharing his joy, his physical education teacher and National Award winner Gurnam Sidhu ‘Gama’ said that Arvinder had an extraordinary passion for sports from a very young age.
Arvinder Khosa: Friends’ ‘Afridi’

Arvinder’s late father Nishan Singh Khosa and his uncle Sukhwant Singh Khosa (former Senior Assistant at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Ferozepur) were the key inspirations behind his journey into cricket. He completed his early education at Dal Chand Senior Secondary School (Ferozepur Cantonment) and pursued higher studies at Guru Nanak College. His aggressive playing style earned him the affectionate nickname “Afridi” among friends and fellow players.
The elections for Cricket Canada had been delayed for a long time due to controversies and administrative hurdles. Even the International Cricket Council (ICC) had been exerting pressure to ensure elections were conducted to improve governance. Arvinder Khosa revealed that when all options seemed closed, he approached the court.
It was only after strict directions from the Supreme Court of Canada that the elections were finally held. In the voting conducted recently, Arvinder Khosa secured a landslide victory. Out of 10 states, 8 states voted in his favor, reflecting strong support for his leadership. This decisive mandate shows that Canada’s cricketing community was looking for a young and visionary leader.
