In today’s time, the crisis facing human health, the environment and agriculture has brought us to a very serious question. In the name of the Green Revolution, we began using chemical fertilisers and poisonous pesticides blindly to increase crop yield. Today, the dangerous consequences of that approach are before us. Our mother earth is becoming barren, water has been polluted, and the air has turned toxic.
Looking at this grave situation, the “Khet Bachao Abhiyan” launched by the Agriculture Department and Punjab Agricultural University is no longer just a slogan. It has become one of the only ways to protect our existence. The core philosophy of this campaign lies in natural farming, which advocates reviving the balance between soil, livestock and human health.

The first and most important principle of natural farming is to improve the health of the soil. Just as a strong building cannot stand on a weak foundation, healthy crops cannot be expected from soil that has become sick and damaged by chemicals. Natural farming places the main emphasis on sustainable soil management.
Years of chemical use have destroyed friendly insects, earthworms and microorganisms present in the soil. Through natural farming, these beneficial organisms are revived by reducing tillage or avoiding it altogether, and by using mulching methods. These organisms make the soil loose and porous, increasing its ability to absorb water and retain moisture. As a result, fields do not need repeated irrigation, and the falling groundwater level can also be checked.
Everything the Crop Needs Is Available in the Field
Many farmers believe that if they do not buy expensive fertilisers and pesticides from the market, how will they farm? Natural farming offers a very affordable and simple answer. In this model, dependence on the market is almost eliminated because all the inputs needed for crops are prepared from materials available on the farm itself.
According to research by the Agriculture Department, Jeevamrit, Ghanjeevamrit and Beejamrit, prepared using the dung and urine of indigenous cows, are excellent examples of this. These inputs naturally fulfil the soil’s need for essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
Natural pesticides such as Neemastra and Agniastra are prepared at home using neem leaves, buttermilk, datura and chillies. These protect crops from diseases. This keeps farming costs minimal and helps farmers escape the debt trap.
Higher Yield Through Non-Chemical Methods
It has been scientifically proven that natural farming can produce higher and better-quality yields through non-chemical methods. When the soil returns to its natural state, the disease resistance of plants improves.
Natural farming emphasises crop rotation and intercropping. Growing more than one crop in the same field at the same time helps nitrogen from the air mix directly into the soil, especially through pulse crops. To prevent pest attacks, certain plants are grown that attract harmful insects towards themselves, keeping the main crop safe. In this way, natural and pure yield is obtained without using poison.
Until some time ago, natural farming or organic products were considered merely an “environmental option” or a hobby of the wealthy. But today, they are not an option. They have become an urgent necessity for protecting our existence.
The grains, fruits and vegetables we eat every day carry a large amount of chemicals into our bodies. These chemicals work like a slow poison. Because of chemical residues in our daily diet, society is seeing a worrying rise in diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, serious heart diseases and deadly illnesses like cancer.
Hospitals are filled with patients, and even young people are suffering heart attacks. If we do not act now, it will become impossible to protect future generations from the grip of disease.
The only natural solution to these diseases and rising medical expenses is to bring pure, chemical-free food back into our kitchens. Naturally grown vegetables, pulses and grains are rich in nutrients and antioxidants.
When we eat poison-free food, our metabolism functions properly and toxins do not accumulate in the blood. Such clean food strengthens our immunity so much that problems like diabetes, blood pressure and heart disease are kept away. In the true sense, natural food is the real medicine.
Public Support Is as Important as Farmers’ Support
Understanding and adopting the core philosophy of natural farming is one of the most meaningful duties of our time. In the beginning, farmers may experience some change in yield, but the long-term benefits are remarkable.
This farming method restores soil fertility, reduces input costs to nearly zero, protects livestock and gives human beings a longer and healthier life.
To make the Khet Bachao Abhiyan successful, the support of ordinary people is just as important as that of farmers. We must increase demand for natural products so that farmers feel encouraged to adopt this path.
