Jag Gill

Punjabis ruling the land of white people; Jag Gill on the Mayor’s chair of Mission city, creates new history

Just as Punjabis have made a name for themselves in the business sector across the world, they are second to none in politics as well. When our Punjabis put their full effort into moving to the land of the white people, and their hard work pays off, Punjabis then start ruling that land on their own merit. The city of Mission, located in the Fraser Valley of the Canadian province of British Columbia, has witnessed a significant political change these days. Jag Gill, a Punjabi youth who has been a long-time city councillor, is now the new mayor-elect of Mission. On September 18, 2026, he was elected unopposed for the post of mayor. This situation arose after his sole opponent, H.S. Kenny Baraich, withdrew his name from the mayoral race.

According to the official election information of the City of Mission, Jag Gill won the position of mayor unopposed in the 2026 general local elections. Set to become mayor at the age of 31, Jag Gill is the youngest person in Mission to reach this position. Interestingly, in 2018, when he was first elected to the city council, he also became the youngest municipal councillor in the history of Mission. After eight years of experience as a councillor, his political journey has now taken another significant turn.

Although Jag Gill’s path to becoming mayor resulted in an electoral victory, it was not the way he had envisioned it at the start of his campaign. On September 18, his opponent Kenny Baraich announced his withdrawal from the mayoral race, following which Gill was elected unopposed. According to local reports, Baraich cited concerns related to personal and family safety behind his decision.

Following this, while addressing the people of Mission on September 20, Jag Gill said that he actually wanted to fight a full election. According to him, he wanted to visit people’s homes, converse with them, explain his work over the past eight years, and present his future vision for the city to the public. He also harbored a desire to answer the tough questions of the residents and ask them directly for their votes.

Although the electoral contest came to an end, Gill made it clear that the process of connecting with people and listening to their problems will not stop. According to his statement, even after becoming mayor, he will continue his approach of going to people’s doors, answering phones, and conversing with them.

Jag Gill’s active role in Mission’s politics began in 2018. That year, at just 23 years of age, he was elected to the Mission City Council. According to the City of Mission’s information, he was elected as the city’s youngest councillor. In the last two municipal elections as well, he secured the highest number of votes among the council candidates.

During his eight years on the council, Gill worked on various matters related to urban administration, budget, development planning, infrastructure, and the community. He has also been associated with the Board of Directors of the Fraser Valley Regional District and the Fraser Valley Regional Hospital District Board. In addition, he has served on various committees.

In a statement issued after becoming mayor, Gill described his eight years of experience as crucial for his next responsibility. He said that during these years, tough decisions had to be made, there were disagreements on various issues, and he had the opportunity to listen to thousands of people. According to him, this experience taught him that leadership does not mean having the last word every time, but rather listening to people, making prepared decisions, and accepting responsibility for them.

Birth, education, and business background in Mission

The special thing about Jag Gill, who is of Punjabi descent, is that his connection with the city of Mission is not limited to politics. He was born and raised here. He received his early education at Cherry Hill Elementary School and graduated from Mission Secondary School. Following this, he studied Business and Communications at the University of the Fraser Valley.

His family values also played a role in shaping his personality. According to Gill’s own statement, his parents taught him from a young age to work hard and to be grateful for whatever he has received in life. Even before entering politics, Gill had started making a mark in the business sector. While studying in high school, he started a business called ‘Mission City Pizza’. According to the City of Mission’s profile, this business, with the support of local people, became more successful than they expected.

His business background gave him the experience to understand the daily challenges associated with small businesses. This is why economic development, local business, and the proper use of taxpayers’ money have been recurring issues in his public statements. Jag Gill’s public role was not limited just to the city council. According to the official profile of Mission City, he has been an active community member and volunteer. He is also associated with Rotary. Besides this, he has worked on various boards and committees.

According to council records, his responsibilities have included the Downtown Mission Business Association, the Fraser Valley Regional District Board, a committee related to regional and corporate services, and other local committees. Apart from politics and business, Gill is fond of taking long walks with his pet dog ‘Kobi’ and reading books. This personal aspect also offers a glimpse of his life connected to the local community.

Upon entering the mayoral race, Jag Gill shared his views on the future of Mission with the public. The issues he raised included safety, infrastructure, economic development, parks and recreational facilities, the accountable use of taxpayers’ money, and transparency in City Hall. Gill stated in his statement that he will prioritize clear direction and accountability in City Hall’s work culture. In his words, the residents of the city should clearly feel the value of the service and facility they receive in exchange for their taxes. In this context, he also used the phrase of “keeping every penny a prisoner” (guarding every penny strictly), through which he emphasized the careful use of public money.

Another important idea of his relates to growing Mission’s economy and tax base. He says that with economic growth, the city can get more opportunities to invest in its required facilities, and the additional financial burden on taxpayers can be reduced. Mission is a city where needs related to population and development are constantly changing. According to Civic Info BC data, the estimated population of Mission is 43,270. This city is part of the Fraser Valley Regional District and has its own distinct geographical, economic, and social identity.

With the development of the city, the pressure on amenities like roads, water, sewerage, transportation, housing, recreation, and public safety also increases. Therefore, the challenge before the new mayor will not only be to make new plans but also to adapt existing services to the needs of a growing population.

In this context, four new trucks were recently added in Mission to increase snow removal capacity during the winter. Along with this, the city has also increased the use of GPS technology in winter services. This example shows that with the growing size of the city, basic municipal services also need to be constantly upgraded.

An important moment for the Punjabi community as well

Jag Gill becoming mayor is also a topic of special interest for the Punjabi and Indo-Canadian community of Mission. The Punjabi community has had a long social, economic, and cultural presence in British Columbia, and the Fraser Valley is also connected to the settlement of several generations of this community. The uniqueness of Jag Gill’s story is that his political journey did not start from an outside political center, but from the same local community in which he was born and raised. His rise, first as a young councillor and now as the city’s youngest mayor, also offers a glimpse of Mission’s multicultural social fabric.

Although one aspect of his identity may be linked to his Punjabi roots, his responsibility as mayor will be towards the residents of the entire city of Mission. This point also emerges in his own statement that taking the city forward requires the joint efforts of the council, city staff, businesses, community organizations, and general residents. Jag Gill also emphasized in his statement that the mayor’s chair is not just a position, but a huge responsibility. He said that a mayor can set the direction for the city, create an atmosphere, and bring people together, but the city is not built by the efforts of the mayor alone. According to him, the shared role of the council, city staff, businessmen, community organizations, and the general public is essential. He also stated that consensus on every issue is not mandatory; making decisions and moving work forward while maintaining mutual respect despite disagreements is part of democratic administration.

Well, as the youngest person to sit on the mayor’s chair of Mission, the name of “Jag Gill” has been recorded in the local political history of the city. Now the real test of his tenure will be how he combines his eight years of council experience with the complex and changing needs of the city as mayor.
