Cannes Film Festival 2026: Pollywood Stars Bring ‘Pind Vibes’ to France

Punjabi cinema has once again made its mark internationally. Popular Punjabi actor Roopi Gill and singer Himmat Sandhu appeared on the prestigious red carpet of the 79th Cannes Film Festival 2026. The two Punjabi artists reached the global platform to promote their upcoming film.

What made the moment special was the striking presentation of Punjabi attire and Gurmukhi script at Cannes, bringing true “Pind Vibes” to France.

What is the Cannes Film Festival?

The Cannes Film Festival is one of the world’s biggest and most prestigious international film festivals. Started in 1946, it honours the finest cinematic work from across the world. Its top award is the prestigious Palme d’Or.

Held every year in Cannes, France, the festival showcases films from different countries and cultures. One of its major attractions is the Marché du Film, the world’s largest film market, where producers and studios promote films to international buyers and distributors.

The presence of Pollywood on such a respected platform sends a clear message: Punjabi cinema is now going global.

The main reason behind this proud moment was Roopi Gill and Himmat Sandhu’s upcoming Punjabi film Chardhi Kala.

Directed by Amarjit Singh Saron and produced by Pinky Dhaliwal under the MAD 4 FILMS banner, the film presents a story rooted in Punjabi culture and human spirit.

Its presence at the Cannes Film Market shows that Punjabi stories now have the power to attract global audiences.

On a red carpet usually dominated by gowns, tuxedos and modern Western fashion, Roopi Gill’s traditional Punjabi outfit stood out beautifully.

Styled by Jyoti Singh, she wore an ivory/off-white kurta with a wide sharara/salwar. She paired it with a double dupatta, draped gracefully over her head in an old Punjabi royal style. Her look reflected Punjab’s rich heritage and royal tradition.

Wheat Motifs, Chakra Designs and Gurmukhi Embroidery

The most special part of Roopi Gill’s outfit was its Punjabi symbolism.

Wheat motifs: Golden wheat designs were embroidered on the outfit and dupatta. Wheat represents Punjab’s soil, farming culture and prosperity.

Chakra motifs: The second dupatta featured chakra designs, symbolising spirituality and Punjabi heritage.

Gurmukhi script:

The word Chardhi Kala was embroidered in Gurmukhi. Wearing one’s mother tongue with pride at an international fashion event was a powerful cultural statement.

Roopi Gill’s jewellery completed the royal Punjabi look.

Her ornaments were inspired by the style of Maharani Jind Kaur’s historic jewellery. She wore a heavy necklace with kundan, polki and green emeralds, along with haathphool, kada and traditional jhumkas.

The jewellery gave her red carpet appearance a strong Punjabi royal identity.

Roopi Gill captioned her post: “Punjab di mitti, Cannes de carpet te.”
